PODCAST: 'Conversations that count'. Series 2. Ep 1. Suzy's story

Hear Suzy's story, in conversation with Violet's CEO Melissa Reader, on the 'Conversations that count' podcast.

My dad, Richard, is at the end of his life. It's a strange mix of ordinary and extraordinary.

One ordinary challenge? Loneliness. After Mum passed, Dad just ached for company. Making sure he wasn't isolated became a big part of his care, a reminder that connection is vital, even in a care facility.

Another ordinary struggle? The sheer emotional weight of it all. Watching Dad decline slowly is incredibly tough, especially while juggling my own life. It can feel isolating, which is why having someone to talk to – a listening ear that truly gets it – has been so valuable.

But there's extraordinary in the ordinary too. The rare moments of lucidity with Dad are treasures. His honesty, his love – they become anchors in the storm. These precious memories are what I hold onto when things feel overwhelming.

Throughout this journey, I've learned the importance of self-compassion. It's okay not to be able to be there every single moment. Being kind to myself is crucial.

Sharing my story feels like a way to connect with others facing similar challenges. We're not alone in this. Strength can be found in the most ordinary acts of love and presence. That's what keeps me going.
